Cat Daily Food Intake Calculator – Estimate Your Cat’s Daily Dry and Wet Food Needs
The Cat Daily Food Intake Calculator is a practical and intelligent tool designed to help cat owners determine how much food their cat should consume each day, based on key factors such as age, body weight, and activity level. Whether you’re feeding your feline dry kibble or wet canned food, this calculator gives a tailored estimate to support your cat’s health and prevent underfeeding or obesity.
How the Calculator Works
This calculator uses an evidence-based method to estimate your cat’s daily caloric needs, also known as the Estimated Energy Requirement (EER). The calculation begins with your cat’s Resting Energy Requirement (RER), which is computed using the formula:
RER = 70 × (Body Weight in kg)0.75
This baseline is then adjusted by an activity factor, which varies depending on your cat’s age and lifestyle:
- Kitten (0–6 months): RER × 3.0
- Young Adult / Active Cat: RER × 1.6
- Neutered Adult (Moderately Active): RER × 1.2
- Senior or Indoor-only Cat: RER × 1.0
The resulting value is the estimated daily calorie requirement in kilocalories (kcal). This number is then divided by the average calorie density of common cat foods to convert it into a practical feeding guide:
- Dry food (kibble): ~3.5 kcal per gram
- Wet food (canned): ~1.0 kcal per gram
For example, if your cat needs 210 kcal/day, that would translate to roughly 60 grams of dry food or 210 grams of wet food per day.
Why Accurate Feeding Matters
Feeding your cat the right amount is essential for maintaining a healthy weight, preventing diabetes, and supporting long-term vitality. Overfeeding may lead to obesity and joint problems, while underfeeding may cause malnutrition or developmental issues in kittens.
Use this calculator regularly to adjust feeding amounts as your cat grows, gains or loses weight, or changes activity levels. Always consult your veterinarian for specific dietary advice tailored to your cat’s health status.
