What Does This Calculator Do?
This tool estimates the recommended Metacam (meloxicam) dosage for cats based on body weight. It provides both oral liquid and tablet dosage guidance, if applicable.
Input
- Weight: The body weight of your cat (in kilograms or pounds).
- Weight Unit: Select either kilograms (kg) or pounds (lbs).
Output
- Total Daily Dose (mg): The amount of meloxicam to administer.
- Liquid Dose (ml): Based on common formulations, e.g., 0.5 mg/ml or 1.5 mg/ml oral suspension.
- Tablet Approximation: For reference if using meloxicam tablets (availability and strength may vary by region).
Calculation Method
For cats, the initial dose is typically 0.2 mg/kg on Day 1, followed by a maintenance dose of 0.05 mg/kg once daily. The dose is calculated by multiplying your cat’s weight (in kg) by the appropriate dose factor.
Example: A 4 kg cat would receive 0.2 mg/kg × 4 = 0.8 mg on the first day, then 0.2 mg on subsequent days.
Veterinary Guidelines
- Metacam is often prescribed to manage pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis or post-operative recovery in cats.
- Due to the narrow therapeutic range in cats, dosing should be done with high precision and always under veterinary supervision.
Common Indications

- Post-surgical pain
- Soft tissue inflammation
Possible Side Effects
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy

- You are using other NSAIDs or corticosteroids (concurrent use increases risk).
Contact Your Veterinarian Immediately If:
- Your cat shows signs of vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite lasting more than 24 hours.
- There are signs of jaundice (yellowing eyes or gums).
- You notice blood in stool or urine.
- Your cat becomes lethargic, disoriented, or unresponsive.
